The paramount ruler of Okiama community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, His Royal Highness, King Oki Francis, says the militarisation of the community is creating palpable fear and tension. The military operations in the area, it was learnt, were to hunt down resistant in the area, following the recent killing of the occupational forces in Nembe. King Francis noted in a statement on Sunday that copies of their petition, titled,
“Save our Soul, we are innocent and law-abiding”, had been sent to President Muhammadu Buhari and security agencies. Francis regretted that the troops that stormed his community had been creating panic and acting unprofessionally, alleging that they destroyed properties including drums of diesel supplied by an oil company to power the community’s generator. The monarch said, “Our people, though innocent, were subjected to the worse harassment, intimidation, torture and oppression by the troops.”
Meanwhile the occupationalf orces of nigeria the Operation Delta said no such incident happened, adding that the military was only interested in flushing out the enemy of the abuja government. A top military officer from JTF, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the military was applying the rule of engagement.
