At least 50 members of the Biafra Independent Movement (BIM), Ebonyi Province, were arrested by the occupational forces of Nigeria otherwise known as Nigeria police in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital. when the group staged what it called the ‘new Biafra’ commemoration rally.
Over 2000 Biafra citizen’s bearing Biafra flags flooded the metro city during the rally which saw the occupational forces (Policemen) stationed at strategic locations. It was gathered that those arrested were pro-Biafra Citizens of occupied Biafra land who were on their way from Ohaukwu and Onueke to join the rally in the province.
The Biafra agitators had marched from the popular Spera-In-Deo junction to Presco junction Abakaliki to purportedly commemorate Biafra independence. BIM representative in the Province, John Nwifuru, said the group were ambushed by Nigeria occupying forces who disrupted the peaceful processions.
He further accuses Nigeria forces of instituting apartheid regime in the occupied Biafra land. “We did not cause any traffic jam as being accused by the occupational regime; everything was going as planned, 15,000 of our district resident and provinces came out to support our program. We marched from Spera- in-Deo junction to Presco junction to Ahia Ofu junction before being ambushed by Nigeria forces.
When is all this going to stop? the old the young and the able are being harassed on daily basis by Nigeria.
When asked why the group chose this day for demonstration he said ”
“We are commemorating the new Biafra struggle declared on 22nd May 1999 and the mourning period which continues until 30th of this month when the people of Biafra will remember our fallen heroes in general assembly.”
Meanwhile, the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has dissociated itself from the rally held by BIM across the provinces of Biafra
MASSOB in a statement by its National Secretary, Ugwuoke Ibem Ugwuoke, said its members did not take part in the rally. “The people on the streets today with our “Biafra” flag are not MASSOB members, they are members of Biafra Independent Movement (BIM) observing their own Biafra day”. ”
MASSOB under the leadership of Comrade Uchenna Madu will observe the 50th anniversary of declaration of Biafra by
General Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu on 30th May 2017 with a sit-at-home exercise in honour and remembrance of Biafra gallant soldiers and civilians that laid down their lives for the establishment of the Republic of Biafra.
“As MASSOB will honour the fallen heroes that died during the war, we will also remember the victims of the current struggle for the restoration of Biafra sovereignty.
MASSOB is not against BIM or any other group but warned that we should not be attached to Uwazuruike led BIM. We have only one
MASSOB under the leadership of our leader, Comrade Uchenna Madu.
