Since Nigeria was amalgamated in 1914 by imperial Britain, evolving the most appropriate administrative configuration for the indigenous ethnic nationalities enclosed within this geopolitical space has been a work in progress. The Movement for New Nigeria, of which the Lower Niger Congress is part, resolved as early as June 2011 to divvy up the current Nigerian geopolitical space into 4 continuous units which can opt to federate, going forward or to evolve into autonomous self-governing nation states. But whichever path chosen for the future shall never be an imposition as has been the case till date. The future shall be determined through the genuine wishes of we the people expressed through a UN-mandated and monitored Referendum organized by each of the four units.
The Lower Niger Congress (LNC), on behalf of the ethnic nationalities of the Lower Niger, initiated an online registration drive for the proposed Referendum for self-determination of its peoples on August 1, 2015. There exist the options of continue to wallow along with the ongoing mess in Nigeria’s political economy indefinitely or instead to devolve into manageable contiguous entities which can begin to address issues that are important to the very survival and wellbeing of the citizenry.
HOW WE GOT INTO THIS ENSLAVEMENT
We have released Northern Nigeria from the leading strings of the Treasury. The promising and well conducted youth is now on an allowance of his own and is about to effect an alliance with a Southern lady of means. I have issued the special license and Sir Fredrick Lugard will perform the ceremony. May the union be fruitful and the couple constant”. Secretary of the Colonies, Lord Harcourt, boss of Fredrick Lugard, referring to the import and purport of the annexation of then Protectorate of Southern Nigeria to the then Protectorate of Northern Nigeria, Cablegram of 31st December 1913
— “The new Nation called Nigeria should be an estate of our great-grandfather Uthman Dan Fodio. We must ruthlessly prevent a change of power. We use the minorities of the North as willing tools and the South as a conquered territory and never allow them to rule over us and never allow them to have control over their future” Premier of Northern Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello, celebrating the grand bequest by the British Crown in the week of Independence, Parrot Newspapers, 12th October, 1960.
— The full execution of the Ahmadu Bello Mission Statement and Battle Script of 1960 resulted in the current master-servant Constitution of Nigeria 1999 imposed by the political descendants of Ahmadu Bello between 1966 and 1999; every one according to his station in the script. MNN, Lagos Declaration, June 30 2011.
— “Anything short of a Northern President is tantamount to stealing our Presidency. Jonathan must go and he will go. If Jonathan or any other Southerner becomes President, the North is determined to and will make the country ungovernable” Lawal Kaita former Governor of old Kaduna State, October 20, 2010.
— “The Northern Bourgeoisie and the Yoruba Bourgeoisie have conspired to keep the Igbo out of the scheme of things. They have been defeated in war, rendered paupers by monetary policy fiat, their properties declared abandoned and confiscated, kept out of strategic public sector appointments and deprived of public services. The rest of the country forced them to remain in Nigeria and has continued to deny them equity. Our present political leaders have no sense of history. There is a new Igbo man who was not born in 1966 and neither knows nor cares about Nzeogwu and Ojukwu. There are Igbo men in the streets who were never Biafrans. They were born Nigerians and are Nigerians, but suffer because of the actions of earlier generations. They would soon decide that it is better to fight their own war and maybe find an honourable peace that to remain in this contemptible state in perpetuity. The Northern Bourgeoisie and the Yoruba Bourgeoisie have exacted their pound of flesh from the Igbos. For one Sardauna, one Tafawa Balewa, one Akintola and one Okotie-Eboh, hundreds of thousands have died and suffered….if this issue is not addressed immediately, no conference will solve Nigeria’s problems”. Sanusi Lamido Sanusi at a public lecture titles Issues in Restructuring Corporate Nigeria, 11th to 12th September 1999 at Arewa House Kaduna, Page 167 of the book IN BIAFRA AFRICA DIED by EMEFIENA EZEANI
2015 ELECTIONS HAVE COME AND GONE IN WHAT THE REST OF THE WORLD SEEMS TO BE CELEBRATING AS A ‘MATURITY OF DEMOCRACY IN NIGERIA’. LOWER NIGER CONGRESS ON BEHALF OF THE PEOPLES OF THE LOWER NIGER, WISHES TO ALERT THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY THAT FOR US, THE INTERNAL COLONIALISM, COMPARABLE ONLY TO THE APARTHEID SOUTH AFRICA, IMPOSED ON US BY THE MISCHIEF OF OUR SUPPOSED COMPATRIOTS IN THE UNION OF NIGERIA, HAS REACHED A BREAKING POINT. THIS SITUATION IS COMPOUNDED BY THE TWIST OF VIOLENT ‘ISLAMIC’ EXTREMISM AS REPRESENTED BY BOKO HARAM WHICH SEEMS TO HAVE THE SYMPATHY OF NOTABLE POLITICAL LEADERS IN THE ALLIANCE BLOCS. FOR THE SAME REASONS NELSON MANDELA, OLIVER THAMBO, WALTER SISULU AND THEIR COMPATRIOTS IN THE THEN SOUTH AFRICA REJECTED A ‘DEMOCRACY ‘ THAT WAS BASED ON MASTER-SERVANT CONSTITUTION, WE REJECT THE ‘1999 CONSTITUTION’ IMPOSED ON US BY THE AFOREMENTIONED NORTH/SOUTH-WEST ALLIANCE, AS THE BASIS OF OUR DEMOCRACY. NIGERIA WAS NOT OUR PROJECT AT INCEPTION. ALL EFFORTS TO MAKE IT OUR PROJECT HAVE FAILED SO FAR. WE EITHER RESOLVE THIS OR WE DISSOLVE THE UNION.
