Manchester City sent a clear message to Barcelona with their 5-0 rout over Newcastle just three days ahead of the first leg of the Champions League last 16 tie.
Manuel Pellegrini’s men were 3-0 up with barely 20 minutes on the clock thanks to a Sergio Agüero penalty and goals by Samir Nasri and Edin Dzeko. City completed the drubbing with two David Silva strikes in the second half.
The match saw Yaya Touré return after missing six games while taking part in the Africa Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast. Another Ivorian, Wilfried Bony, made his debut for the club after arriving in January, coming on to replace Agüero on the hour mark.
